Our History and Core Business

Historic gas lantern in Helsingborg.

From Gaslight to Green Heating

Öresundskraft has been a vital part of Southern Sweden’s energy landscape for over a century. Our story began in 1859, when the streets of Helsingborg were first lit with gaslight. Over the decades, we transitioned from gas to electricity, and 2013 we also expanded into district heating, a sustainable and efficient way to warm homes and businesses across the region.

Powering a Sustainable Future

Today, we are wholly owned by the City of Helsingborg, serving as a key driver of sustainable energy solutions in the region. Our core business revolves around electricity, district heating, cooling, and energy services, all with a strong commitment to reducing environmental impact. Filbornaverket, our flagship combined heat and power (CHP) plant, is central to this mission, transforming 220,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste into energy every year.

Driving the Energy Transition

Building on our legacy, Öresundskraft is now focused on the electrification of the transportation sector, advancing renewable energy solutions, and pioneering carbon reduction technologies. We are committed to driving the transition towards a climate-neutral future, supporting both Helsingborg’s climate goals and Sweden’s national ambitions.

We are guided by the vision, One Plan for One Planet.
