From Waste to Breakthrough: Helsingborg at the Frontline of Europe’s Climate Revolution.

CINEA, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, manages the EU Innovation Fund; one of the largest funding programs for innovative climate projects in Europe and a cornerstone of the EU Green Deal. This ambitious plan aims to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, with significant emission reductions of 55% already by 2030.

In 2024, Öresundskraft’s CCS initiative at the Filborna waste-to-energy plant in Helsingborg, Sweden, was awarded €54 million from this prestigious fund. This substantial support reflects the EU’s confidence in the project’s ability to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate the path to climate neutrality, directly contributing to the goals outlined in the EU Green Deal.

For Öresundskraft, it means accelerated development and strengthened capabilities to drive groundbreaking climate action. For Helsingborg, which has set its own ambitious target to be climate-neutral by 2030, the funding is crucial. CCS at Filbornaverket is a key component in reaching that goal, positioning the city as a leader in sustainable energy innovation.
