Low-Emission Waste-to-Energy at Filbornaverket

Filbornaverket in Helsingborg is undergoing a groundbreaking transformation through the implementation of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). This innovative project captures and permanently stores 200,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually by removing carbon dioxide directly from the plant’s flue gases before it reaches the atmosphere. This significantly reduces emissions from waste-to-energy production while enabling Filbornaverket to continue providing district heating and electricity for homes and businesses across the region.

Öresundskraft’s investment in CCS means that customers connected to the district heating network benefit from district heating with very low fossil emissions, helping to reduce the climate impact associated with heating. The project also supports Helsingborg’s ambition to reach net zero emissions by 2030 while strengthening the local energy system.

The climate benefits go even further. By capturing biogenic CO₂ – carbon released from organic materials such as food waste and paper – the project permanently removes carbon dioxide that would otherwise return to the atmosphere. This creates certified carbon removals that can help address emissions that are difficult to eliminate in other sectors.

Through this initiative, Öresundskraft is contributing to international, national and local efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while supporting Helsingborg’s ambition to reach net zero emissions by 2030.

This means that carbon is permanently removed from the natural cycle, actively lowering the amount of CO₂ in the atmosphere.
