The climate won’t wait, and neither will we.

Everyone is talking about the climate, about what we should do, what we must do, and how urgent it is. But the real question is: when do we move from words to action? At Öresundskraft, we’ve made our decision. We’re doing it now.

With Innozhero, we’re building one of the world’s first full-scale CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) facilities at a waste-to-energy combined heat and power plant. It’s a decisive step, not just for us, but for Helsingborg, our customers, and the climate at large.

When CCS is fully operational at Filbornaverket in 2028, we will be able to capture 200,000 tonnes of CO₂ every year. That means eliminating fossil emissions from the plastic in the waste we incinerate. But it doesn’t stop there. We’re also capturing biogenic CO₂ removing carbon that’s already in the atmosphere. Because today, it’s no longer enough to stop emitting. We also need to start removing. And with CCS, we can. That’s real climate impact.

This project is essential for Filbornaverket because it makes our plant climate neutral. It’s essential for Helsingborg because it helps the city reach its ambitious goal of climate neutrality by 2030. It’s essential for our customers because it secures access to affordable district heating in a future without emission allowances. And it’s essential for businesses in our region that want to take real climate responsibility. By purchasing negative emissions from us, they strengthen their brands while actively helping to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere.

For many of our customers, especially in construction and real estate, Innozhero is more than a climate solution. It’s a way to close the loop. When a building is constructed, waste is generated. That waste becomes fuel at Filbornaverket, providing district heating and electricity. Now, with CCS, we can capture and store the CO₂ from that process. It means emissions from materials, construction, and energy can be removed locally and permanently.

This allows companies to take full responsibility for the climate impact of their buildings, not just during operation, but across the full life cycle: from material production and construction, through everyday use, to demolition and waste management. That kind of circular climate action is rare and it sets Helsingborg apart.

We know someone has to go first. Someone has to prove it can be done, that it’s not just possible, but necessary to take the lead. Because the climate won’t wait. Our hope is that others will follow, build on what we’ve started, and make it even better. We don’t have all the answers, but we have the courage to begin.

Personally, I feel incredibly proud to be part of something that can create impact far beyond our own region. This is a project where technology, public good, and climate benefit come together. A project that offers hope for Helsingborg, for Sweden, and for future generations.
